Muhlenburg College: Ettinger Hall

Scope of Project

The restoration of the exterior facade of one of the oldest buildings on the campus of Muhlenberg College. The project required the replacement in kind of the sash. The existing windows were single glazed 1/1 sash, with a transom above. The design requirements called for an insulated window which would duplicate the original details of the sash and use the existing weights and chains balance system.

Construction

Working closely with the client, shop drawings were produced showing the details necessary to fabricate the windows to their original design using 1/2" insulated glass as the glazing medium. The sash was manufactured to a thickness of 1-3/4". The sash was milled to receive the hardware for a weights and chains installation as per the clients requirements. The sash was constructed with an additional 1/4" in height to allow the scribing of the bottom rail in the event the existing openings were not square. The original weights and chain balancing system was reused. The sash was manufactured from Northeast White Pine. The sash was treated with a preservative, water repellent. Prior to glazing the sash was primed.
